Matthew R. Whitler

Matthew R. Whitler is an attorney and member at Shuman McCuskey Slicer’s Winchester office, where he focuses his practice on civil litigation defense throughout West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, Potomac Highlands, and other portions of the Mountain State. He represents individuals, corporations and businesses, and state, county, and local governmental agencies, departments, and employees in a broad spectrum of complex legal matters throughout the region.

Matt brings a thoughtful, solutions-oriented approach to every case. He is known for his meticulous preparation, clear communication, and commitment to achieving efficient, favorable outcomes for his clients both in and out of the courtroom.

Matt has almost 30 years of experience handling civil rights cases, premises liability claims, product liability cases, wrongful death claims, automobile accidents, and uninsured/underinsured and first party extracontractual claims. Matt also represents insurance companies in coverage issues throughout West Virginia, and he advises international companies on jurisdictional and contractual issues in the state.

He has successfully represented clients as lead counsel in numerous civil jury trials, including successful defense verdicts on allegations of an animal assault on a minor, alleged vehicular contact with a pedestrian, and claims of traumatic head trauma. Finally, Matt has also been successful in obtaining summary judgment and favorable appellate rulings from numerous trial and appellate courts at both the state and federal levels.

Committed to public service, Matt has served on boards of directors of various non-profit organizations. Outside of the office, he enjoys cycling, reading, watching sports and movies with his sons, and hiking with his wife and their golden retrievers.
